My Role

I was responsible for everything in this project as the only Product Designer.

Problem

How might we make the process of assembling furniture less frustrating?

Solution

prod-input.gif
Easy access to specific guides

Look up any piece of furniture in the IKEA catalogue by its name or product number.

Make sure you have all the tools

Provide details of necessary tools to make sure users have the right ones. If they don’t, direct them to stores nearby where they can purchase the tools.

No missing parts

Take users through all different parts that come in the package and give them the option to contact IKEA if there’s any missing/ defective part.

Test

Empathize

I interviewed 3 people who had had experience assembling IKEA furniture: H, who assembled his sister’s

bed when she moved into college; N, who assembled a bookshelf in her apartment and O, who assembled chairs for his parents’ dinner party. From these interviews, I gained the following insights:

1

Users don't know what tools or what kind of tools are needed before they start the assembly process.

2

Users don't know if the parts they assemble are safe and secure enough before moving onto assembling the next part.

3

Some users find the manual hard to follow.

Define

From the needfinding data, I defined the problem that needed to be solved: Assembling IKEA furniture can be frustrating.

I also came up with a typical user journey of the furniture assembling process.

Ideate

While ideating, I reviewed the requirements and constraints that I had to work with.

Requirements

•  Flexible enough to be able to assist in any of the furniture in the IKEA catalogue

•  Can help the user from the point of unpacking to accomplishing the task

•  Straightforward

No learning curve, no further complication.

Assumptions

•  Has access to all product specifications in the IKEA catalogue

•  User has already purchased the product and is ready to unpack and assemble

•  User unpacks and assembles one product at a time

•  Only one user is taking part in the assembly process at a time

•  User has access to an iOS device and wifi or cellular data

Constraints

•  Reasonable cost

•  Technology used/proposed should be either exiting and within the reasonable future

•  No physical user testing or in-person user interviews (due to COVID)
